I’m Ally. Welcome to Made of Stars.

I share a crazy, beautiful, noisy life with my husband, Mat, and our tiny vegans. Mat and I aim to maintain a sense of humour – and our sanity! – as we navigate parenthood and the Lego blocks on our living room floor.

We live on the beautiful north coast of NSW, Australia.

I am passionate about ethical veganism, Australian politics, breastfeeding, and homebirth (my sons were born at home). I am a voracious reader (and am always on the lookout for book recommendations. Do you have one for me?).

I have a Bachelor of Social Work, and have spent most of my career working in the field of family violence, specifically as an advocate for woman and children.

I embraced veganism as a teenager in the mid-90’s; now I am raising vegan children.

Freelance Writing

Between 2007-2011, I wrote a regular column called ‘Raising Vegan Children’ for Vegan Voice magazine (now defunct).

I am an Associate Editor at The Scavenger, where I write about veganism and animal rights. Readers of Made of Stars may be interested in my articles about vegan pregnancy and vegan diets for children.

This Blog

Made of Stars provides an opportunity for me to continue to write about my experiences as a parent of vegan children. I also intend for this blog to be a safe and supportive space for vegan parents and other vegans – we are a diverse and passionate bunch!

I feature delicious recipes that are enjoyed by my own family. Refer to the Recipe Index for a list of recipes on this blog.

I write a series called My A-Z of Veganism, where I examine an issue or topic related to veganism, and share my experiences as a vegan.

If you are interested in sharing our journey, you can follow Made of Stars by entering your email address in the ‘Follow this Blog’ section on the home page.

Or you can follow along on Twitterfacebook or Pinterest.

I enjoy reading your comments, suggestions, and questions. You can comment on the blog or contact me via the Contact Me section.

  8. Cute…he will be off in no time 🙂 Yip, everyone thinks that he skipped walking because he just runs around all day long!

    • Ally says:

I can relate! My eldest son was like that. He walked at 10.5 months, started running soon after and hadn’t stopped! He is now 6. I’m sure his motto must be ‘why walk when you can run’!

  9. Exactly! I am pretty sure vegans get enough nutrients to have that kind of energy 🙂

  18. Hey Ally,
Thanks so much for checking out my blog! Anyway, I’m here to check out your blog and to say, “Hi.” Like you, I’m passionate about veganism and dark chocolate. Since I have no kiddos and don’t live in Australia, I don’t know much about your other passions. It looks like you’ve done a lot of writing – that’s awesome! I’m going to go explore your blog now. Celeste:)

Hi Ally, I found you through Celeste’s blog and have been browsing around your blog, loving what I see and read! I think you’ll be interested in a post I wrote a few weeks ago about a vegan friend and three home births.
My blog is a fashion blog, but it also includes the importance of healthy living (plant-based diet, of course!).

My daughter is a vegan ad I’m sure you’ll love her blog!

    Have a happy day!
    With love and compassion!

      Hi Carmen!
I’m sorry it has taken me so long to reply.
Thank you for referring me to your blog. I love reading about other women’s homebirths! What a vibrant, beautiful soul your friend is.
I also enjoyed Jean’s blog- you were right! Thank you. I am ‘following’ her now…. in a totally nice, non-creepy, non-stalkerish way. 🙂

  22. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’m looking forward to reading over yours!

  23. laurasmess says:

Hey there Ally! So glad that you found me so that I could find your lovely blog. We share some similarities… I also have a BSW, though I studied law initially. I’m working in aged care and advocacy. Challenging but rewarding and humbling at the same time. I’m not a vegan but my husband and I eat about 70-80% plant based at present. I can tell I’m going to love your recipes xx

    • Ally says:

Hi Laura! It’s always lovely to meet another social worker. It is interesting that you studied law. I sometimes wish I had studied the law/social work double degree. I worked at a community legal centre in my role as a domestic violence advocate. I married a social worker. My husband is looking at moving into aged care. He has just left the child protection field. Thank you for your lovely comment. 🙂

      • laurasmess says:

Thanks Ally. Interesting that you married a SW… I imagine that it’d make things a little easier in terms of mutual understanding, reflection and support when work gets difficult. My husband is in animation/illustration, and though he tries to be supportive at times he really has no idea. The background in law helps at times. I did 3 1/2 years so I’ve got contract, criminal law, torts and a few other things under my belt. I hope that your husband likes aged care. I’m currently working in that area, home visiting and at an Alzheimers clinic once per week. It’s sad at times but very rewarding. Thanks for your sweet reply xx

  24. Hey Ally! I’m having a little fun on my blog and playing a game. I tagged you on my post to play the game with me. It’s a quick, simple game. If you play, you might win a new car!! Haha – that’s a LIE! Still, I hope you play! Here’s the link: http://honkifyourevegan.com/2013/09/21/tell-me-a-lie/
